Should we make fun of Gobert for Crying?

on

This is a tricky one. Rudy Gobert who is a deserving all-star (over Klay Thompson this year, if you’re asking) has been snubbed because of a higher valuation for offensive players than defense. His disappointment is well grounded.

But he’s also getting roasted for crying about it. Andre Iguodala quoted “Friday” by asking if he was gonna cry in the car. Draymond Green took a shot, and Isaiah Thomas told him he was too big to be crying like that.

Toughness is a valuable trait in contact sports, emotional and physical. It’s not like Gobert hasn’t been recognized either, with a Defensive Player of the Year award to his name, and being the best (or second, some nights) player on a good playoff team. He clearly cares, perhaps at not being recognized for his achievements. It may have hurt him more than others. He also comes from a different country and a different culture, has a different overall makeup than everyone else in the world. The way he reacted probably shouldn’t be mocked.

There is a case to be made that he shouldn’t care what others think – and that’s true. You know you’re a defensive player and you know how these things go. Winning is what’s important, you don’t play for all star recognition.

What do you guys think?
